Junior to play baseball for USA in international tournament

    By David Lim

Catcher Arden Pabst ‘13 will play for the USA Baseball 16U team at the International Baseball Federation World AA/16U Youth Championships in Mexico.

Pabst was selected for the American team after a series of trials from June through earlier this month when the final 20-man roster was announced.

Varsity teammate pitcher Lucas Giolito ’12 was named to the preliminary roster of the 18U National Team in July and will play at COPABE Pan American AAA/18U Championships in Cartagena, Colombia if he makes the final cut in September.

After the preliminary 16U Championships, Pabst was one of 38 selected to proceed to the National Team Trials in Cary, North Carolina. The players were divided into two teams that played 6 games against each other while coaches assessed the players’ performance. Pabst was named to the official roster on August 13.

During the training period, the 16U team won both of its exhibition games at Duke University against local clubs teams.

The IBAF World AA/16U Youth Championships features some of the top 16 and under players from 11 countries. The biennial series in Lagos de Moreno, Mexico will run from August 19 to 28.

The US team will play its first game in the initial round-robin stage against Australia tomorrow at 5 pm (PT). Play-by-play coverage will be available at http://www.ibaf.org/en/competition/a5bda5bb-4501-4167-a3fd-5a06f94bd4e0.
