KC Cord commits to Dartmouth

By Allana Rivera

The Dartmouth women’s track & field team was selected as one of the 2010 All Academic Track & Field Teams in the United States. This newly-awarded status perfectly epitomizes the decision of KC Cord ’12 to commit to Dartmouth.

“I was torn because I had the option between running for USC, a Pac-10 school, or Dartmouth… I had to choose between hardcore athletics and hardcore academics,” Cord said.

Ultimately, Cord chose the more academic route, officially committing to Dartmouth on Oct. 23 after a visit to the campus on Oct. 16.

Cord noted that the application process was not as hard as anticipated. “I sent out e-mails, the coach got back to me and liked my times…” Cord, who runs primarily the 100, 200, 400, and 4×4, seemed to be just what Dartmouth was looking for.

However, despite this relatively easy process, the road to finally being recruited was far from easy. Cord’s impressive start as a freshman (Cord’s 4×4 relay team advanced all the way to CIF finals that year) was suddenly stalled as Cord was sidelined for an entire season due to an ACL injury she sustained during soccer season-another sport in which she is a varsity starter. Cord tried many times to come back, but her injury was too great to allow for a successful return to the team.

Junior year found Cord in the same position: trying to work her way back into shape.

“It was hard to get back into it… Plus, I had to come back late because of soccer,” she said.

Despite these setbacks, Cord is triumphant in finally being committed to the school she knows is right for her.

“I loved the team, and the classes… The campus is really nice, and the size of the student body is just right,” Cord says. However, Cord admits that “there’s just as much stress… [school after college applications] is not as easy as everyone says it is…”

On top of a rigorous academic schedule, Cord is returning for another year on the varsity soccer team (of which she is a key player, helping them win CIF and Regional championship titles this past year). In addition, Cord is training with her sprint coach, Coach Quincy Watts, in order to get ready for track season in the spring.

In spite of Cord’s current packed schedule, she is excited for the year to come.

“I am obviously really excited to run there, but it’s also just a whole new experience… I’m excited to meet new people and actually choose classes I’m interested in. Plus, I wanted to get away from home.”

Cord’s sprinting career began early, as she said that she has been running “basically forever.”

Cord hopes to use her experience in finishing off her year strong, as she says she is “looking forward to a really great senior year.”
