KHWS, Harvard-Westlake’s student-run online radio station, hit the air waves for the first time this school year today Oct. 23 with student DJ Alisha Bansal ’14 playing “Kong” by Bonobo to kick off her 5 p.m. set.
Bansal is the first of fifty student DJs who will broadcast this year once every two weeks for their hour-long sets. The record number of DJs caused some changes in the format of the station, station co-founder Sam Wolk ’13 said.
In addition, every night Tuesday to Thursday will feature different DJs, who will broadcast for two hours during what Wolk calls “primetime” from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Created in April 2011, KHWS is made up of student DJs who broadcast mostly music but also anything from comedy shows and to poetry readings.
“The freedom with which KHWS allows students to express themselves through an outlet that isn’t traditionally available to them is definitely why I love it so much,” Wolk said.
