MLB pitcher holds press conference on field

By Jordan Freisleben, Matthew Lee and Alice Phillips

Media crews crowded onto Ted Slavin Field Feb. 11 as Major League Baseball pitcher Randy Wolf held a press conference about his recent signing to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Wolf told the press of his expectations and hopes for playing for the Dodgers in the upcoming season. He also spoke about returning to play after recovering from a shoulder injury.

“I feel like I’m ready to go,” Wolf said.

Wolf has been using school facilities for the past month and a half to get in shape for the upcoming spring training in Arizona. Wolf’s training has included using the weight room as well as the track. He said that he trains at the campus because of the “nice facility” and because it is relatively close to where he lives.

Wolf has gotten to know several members of the varsity baseball team through talking to the team members before their practices and playing catch with them.

“The thing about Randy, [he’s] a pretty humble guy,” varsity baseball head coach Matt LaCour said. “He talks to the guys, and the guys like having him around.”

LaCour has known Wolf since high school, when their high school teams competed against each other.  LaCour said that his family and Wolf’s family are quite close to each other. Wolf and LaCour have been in contact with each other over the years.

“I guess seeing the professionals play, it raises the expectation and level of play,” said varsity baseball player Sam Katz ’09.
