Padres ink No. 7 pick Fried

By Robbie Loeb

Left-handed pitcher Max Fried ’12 agreed to terms with the San Diego Padres Friday for a deal worth $3 million, the MLB’s assigned slot value for the 7th overall pick.

The 6-foot-4 southpaw was the first high school pitcher taken in this year’s First-Year Player Draft.

The former UCLA commit will head to the Padres’ Spring Training facility in Peoria, Ariz..

In his senior season with the Wolverines, Fried went 8-2 with a 2.2 ERA and 105 strikeouts, giving up 43 hits and 29 walks in 66 innings.

Lucas Giolito ’12, who was drafted with the 16th pick by the Washington Nationals, remains unsigned and has until July 13 to come to terms with the team. UCLA will remain a possibility for the 6-6 righty until he inks a deal with the Nationals.

The 100 mph man attended Friday’s matchup between the Nationals and the New York Yankees at Nationals Park, according to the Washington Post.

Giolito will likely sign for more than the MLB’s suggested slot value of $2.125 million for the 16th pick, as the pitcher was considered to be the draft’s top prospect before injuring his elbow in March.
