Senior MVP sparks hope for girls’ golf

While the rest of the team’s roster won’t be set until today, Ally Young ’07, now in her fourth year on varsity and last year’s MVP, will return as the girls’ varsity golf team captain.

Young has earned third place overall in Mission League for the past two seasons and is accompanied by Nicole Scher ’07, the only other senior on the team.

“It’s going to be hard because we have a young team,” Young said. “There are a lot of freshmen and sophomores.”

“I hope they will be okay because they don’t really play in competitions outside of school.”

Although the girls’ varsity golf team finished with a 2-8 record last year, Coach Megan Phillips is optimistic for the upcoming season.

The team, led by Phillips and Assistant Coach Kanwaljit Kochar, will kick off the season in a Sept. 19 match against Alemany, the first match of their planned ten-match season.
“I am excited for the season as we have a combination of strong returning players and new players trying out for varsity for the first time,” Phillips said.

“I am confident that both individuals and the team as a unit will rise to the physical and mental challenges that our competition offers.”

Aside from Alemany, other Mission League competition includes a two-match set against Notre Dame, whom Phillips believes will be the toughest opponent.

Over the summer, players prepared for the approaching season by attending golf camps across the country.

Young participated in golf tournaments in California and Arizona during the postseason.
It will be difficult for the team to come back from last season’s losing record, Scher said
“Our team isn’t as solid as it used to be, but I think we can pull through it,” she said.
