Senior pitcher commits to Brown University

Third baseman/starting pitcher Cameron Deere ’16 has committed to Brown University to continue his baseball career.

Deere, who was named Mission League Pitcher of the Year, pitched in 13 games, and went 7-2 in his starts. His season earned run average was 2.51 and he struck out 52 batters.

Although he was primarily used as a starting pitcher, Deere earned one save in four relief appearances. Deere, who was selected as a member of the 1st team all-CIF, primarily came out of the bullpen during his sophomore season, as there was no room for him in the starting rotation that year due to Jack Flaherty ’14, Logan Simon ’14 and Michael Vokulich ’14.

“I chose Brown because my family and I decided that it was in my best interest to go to a highly academic school, but I realized that it was important for me to be able to attend a school that was ready to compete in whichever Division I league or conference they are in,” Deere said.

While Deere was the ace of the pitching staff this past season, he also contributed at the plate to the Wolverines’ second round finish in the 2015 CIF-SS Division I playoffs.

Deere had at least one plate appearance in all 30 of the games the team played this past season. He hit .440 (which was third in the Mission League) in 84 at bats to go along with five home runs (first in the Mission League) and 35 runs batted in. Deere also had a presence on the base paths, adding seven stolen bases on nine attempts, as he was chosen to the 2015 Cal-Hi Sports All-State Underclass Team for his all-around efforts during his junior year.

“I think that I have a lot of room for improvement on both sides of the ball, and I plan on putting in the work necessary to get me in the best shape to be able to compete next season,” Deere said. “This year, we have a lot of young, talented players, but I think that as an experienced senior, I need to be able to get them in tune with the Harvard-Westlake mentality.”

Deere is expected to return as one of the senior captains of next season’s team, which will be a national championship contender.
