Senior runner wins event at national track invitational

By Julius Pak

Two days after playing in a grueling CIF quarterfinal girls’ soccer match, runner Cami Chapus ’12 won her event at the Brooks PR Invitational. Chapus finished first in the 10-girl, 800-meter race in two minutes and 10 seconds, the number two time in the nation, despite “feeling so sore” the day before, she told commentators at the Invitational.

“I had the roughest soccer game I’ve played on late Friday night,” Chapus said. “I was not feeling peaked at all for this.”

Chapus, a three-season athlete, has been running almost non-stop since the beginning of cross-country training in the summer, taking only a two-week break in between the cross-country and soccer seasons to recuperate. She is also relatively new to the event, having mainly competed in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter events last year.

“Going into this, it’s not my main event from last year, but I definitely wanted to do the 800,” Chapus said. “I knew it would be a battle, with girls who have more experience running indoors, so it was an exciting race.”

Cross-country and track co-captain Amy Weissenbach ’12 ran earlier in the 400-meter race at the Invitational. Weissenbach started in the furthest back position on the inside lane of the track but was unable to catch up to her competitors.

The 2012 Brooks PR Invitational was held at the Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle and invited the top runners in each event from across the country.
