Due to the smoke from the barbecue at Homecoming on Saturday, neighbors called the fire department, causing trucks to arrive on campus at 6:20 p.m., but left almost immediately, security guard Jim Wirth said.

Also, smoke from the Le Sassier catering company’s food prompted the fire alarm to go off at 4:15 p.m. in Feldman-Horn and Taper Gym, prompting the JV girls volleyball team and those in attendance to evacuate the gym during the warm-up, according to Chief of Campus Operations Jim DeMatte said.

“The volleyball game was about to start, but we heard a fire alarm and were told to evacuate Taper,” Amira Yashruti ’17 said.

Security guards determined that both buildings were safe to reenter within 5-10 minutes after the incident, so they called off the fire department, DeMatte said.

The Le Sassier catering company was catering an alumni reception dinner at the Feldman-Horn Gallery.

The volleyball game against St. Lucy’s, scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m., was slightly delayed, but players did not feel it was much of an inconvenience, outside hitter Eve Baxter ’19 said.
