Softball struggles with league play

Christina Cavanaugh ’10 tossed a no-hitter last Tuesday in a 6-0 league match win over Flintridge Sacred Heart. Unfortunately for the team, it lost any momentum it may have gained from the shutout after an 18-0 loss to Chaminade two days later.

“Christina is really our strongest pitcher,” Laurie Schleimer ’08 said.  “And she’s only going to get better over the next few years.”

It has been an up and down season so far for the young Wolverine squad that features only three seniors.

During one particularly rough stretch, the team was outscored 55-3 over five games spanning from March 15 to April 8.

“Our biggest problem is that last year our entire starting infield was made up of seniors, except for Julie [Fernandez ’08], so this year we’ve kind of had to start from scratch,” Schleimer said.

Fernandez, committed to Lehigh University for softball, has been the rock in the lineup all year with a batting average of .487.

The future Mountain Hawk also leads the team in runs (12), hits (19), triples (3), doubles (2), home runs (3), on-base percentage (.615), slugging percentage (.897), and earned run average (2.3).

The team suffered an extra loss during the Chaminade game when Lucy Jackson ’09 tried to take out the opposing catcher to score a run.

Jackson suffered a hair-line fracture in her left wrist and will be out for the entirety of the season.  She is tied for the team lead with six runs batted in.

“Lucy’s definitely a central part of the team,” Schleimer said. “We don’t have a lot of depth.  It just hurts because someone without much experience will have to step in.  Lucy was one of our best hitters.”
