Sophomore sells jewelry to raise money for Darfur

Shelby Layne ’09, in an effort to help the genocide in Darfur, has been collecting and selling jewelry to fundraise for solar cookers for women in refugee camps. The solar cookers will allow women to cook within the safety of the camps, instead of going outside of the camps to gather firewood, exposing themselves to the dangers of rape or murder. For every $30 raised, a refugee family is given two solar cookers. She commenced her project in September, and has raised a total of $13,800.
