Students qualify for robotics championship

Team 62, a robotics team also known as the Kanagasabapathys, earned second place at the Robodox Challenge tournament at Granada Hills Charter High School Saturday out of 36 teams.

The team qualified for state, national and world championships in past tournaments.

Team 62 is not affiliated with the school, but many of its members are also part of the school’s robotics team, Team 1148, also known as the Wafflebots.

“While our performance was not what we would have liked to see, we feel that we made the most of our robot and the most of our ranking,” Jonathan Damico ’18 said of Team 62’s placing in the Robodox Challenge tournament. “We are starting work tomorrow on our championship design, which will be more efficient but will take more time to build. We are eager to test this new design.”

Team 62 made semi-finals in their first tournament of the year, Clash in the Canyon, at Viewpoint School Oct. 19.

They placed first in their next tournament, Victory in the Valley, out of 40 other robotics teams at Reseda High School Nov. 14.

“We have qualified for state, national and world championships already through hard work and determination and are eager to continue our streak of success,” Team 62 member DJ Lesh ’18 said.

Team 62 participants also work with the HW Robotics Team 1148 led by Jake Zimmer ’16.

Team 1148 is preparing its robots to compete in FIRST Robotics Competition March 9-12.

“We are currently building strong drive bases for our robots this year and are experimenting with building different mechanisms that could be used for this year’s competition,” Damico said about Team 1148.
