Tennis reels without star

With the loss of Hilary Barte, the girls’ tennis team is off to a 3-5 start this season.

“We aren’t worried about our early season record because we have not played a match at full strength yet, and we have the toughest preseason schedule in Southern California,” Head Coach Chris Simpson said. The Wolverines are still adjusting to playing this season without Barte, last year’s star, who decided to set her sights on professional play and left the school.

In the first scrimmage match of the season, the Wolverines beat Beverly Hills High by an overall score of 9-6.

The next day, in the first regular season match of the year, the Wolverines suffered a loss against Santa Barbara which began a four match losing streak that included losses to Peninsula High as well as Campbell Hall and Palos Verdes High.

However, they began league play with two early wins, including an 18-0 win over Alemany in their first league match.

“We have not been tested in league yet, but I think we have a chance to go undefeated for the rest of the season,” Simpson said.
