Boys tennis defeated Palos Verdes High School at home 15-3 March 3 to maintain its undefeated record this season.
Previously, the squad defeated rivals University High School, the opponent that ended the Wolverines’ season last year, on the road 14-4 Feb. 20. Additionally, the boys travelled to Texas for the UTR High School Team Tennis Championships, where they eventually won the tournament in the men’s diamond division after defeating Westwood High School 6-1 Feb. 29.
The Sea Kings were ranked as the No. 2 team in CIF heading into this match, right behind the Wolverines.
Overall, the squad only lost one doubles match and two singles matches against the Sea Kings. Doubles duo Jonah Dickson ’20 and Pat Otero ’21 won all three of their matches 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1.
In the singles section, Corey Marley ’20 won all three of his matches 7-5, 6-4 and 6-1. The team’s overall record is now 7-0. Amaan Irfan ’21 described his admiration for his teammates after defeating the Sea Kings.
“Coming in we were expected to be the top two teams in CIF but our guys really showed up and it was a clean win,” Irfan said. “Our doubles teams are solid and our singles guys played great.”
Additionally, doubles player Pat Otero ’21 was glad to see the team’s effort rewarded in this important game.
“I was happy to see that continued hard work leads to success on the court,” Otero said.
The squad’s next game is at home against Mission League rival Loyola High School March 10. Heading into the rest of the season, Irfan said that the win against the high-ranked Sea Kings is a great sign for the rest of the season.
“Getting big wins against the other good CIF teams, like University High School and Palos Verdes High School, is great news for us as we head into league,” Irfan said.
