Univeristy of Michigan defeats University of Oregon on Ted Slavin Field

    By Luke Holthouse

The University of Michigan beat the University of Oregon 9-8 in double overtime in a men’s lacrosse game held at Ted Slavin Field on Friday, Feb. 25. Michigan and Oregon had scheduled a regular season game against each other because both teams were on road trips across southern California at the same time. Harvard-Westlake offered to host the game and parents of the school’s lacrosse program helped organize the event.

Michigan and Oregon’s teams play in the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association. The MLCA is not a part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) but is the largest collegiate club lacrosse association in the nation.

Oregon lead throughout most of the game and were up 8-4 at the end of the third quarter,  but Michigan scored four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Senior attackman Chad Carroll scored the game-winning goal in the second period of overtime, his fourth goal of the game. Michigan is the MCLA’s Division I three-time defending national champion and is currently ranked the number one team in league. Heavy rain throughout the entire game.

An estimated crowd of several hundred people made up of Harvard-Westlake students, parents, faculty as well as Oregon and Michigan supporters could purchase lacrosse merchandise and food from an In-N-Out truck at the game. Heavy rain throughout most of the game led to lower attendance than expected. Michigan has used Harvard-Westlake facilities in past years while traveling and hope to continue to do so in the future.

Oregon ended its road trip by dropping to Chapman University on Feb. 27 by a score of 9-5, falling to 0-2 on their season. Michigan plays Loyola Marymount University March 2 and also plays Chapman March 5. The team continues to use Ted Slavin Field as a practice facility during school hours.
