Wolverines dominate league despite inconsistent play

Coming off of a strong campaign in the Bonita 2017 Varsity Water Polo Tournament, the girls’ water polo team continued dominating the league, beating Louisville 15-5 on Jan. 31.

With this victory, the squad maintained its undefeated league record, and also secured the top spot in the Mission League table. This victory is also the Wolverines’ first away-win of the season.

The team was led by Paige Thompson ’17, who scored six goals. Taylor Lacour ’19 and Camille Oswald ’17 also contributed to the Wolverines’ total, with Lacour tallying three goals and Oswald tallying one goal, six assists and five steals.

Despite the win, some players said that they did not play their best, missing out on scoring opportunities and lacking a solid defense.

“Though we pulled through a win, we definitely did not play our best,” Thompson said. “We have played much stronger teams this season and have done much better against them, and today was not our best example of the work we have put in this season. Our coaches have been discussing inconsistency throughout the season, and that is certainly something we are looking to improve upon.”

The players will hope to focus and play their best in their next match away against Alemany on Feb. 1. A win in that match would hand the Wolverines the Mission League title for the 21st year in a row.
