Wrestling drops second straight meet

By Luke Holthouse

The last two wrestling meets before semester break ended in defeat for the varsity wrestling team this week. The Wolverines lost to Alemany 60-15 on Monday before losing to Chaminade 54-21 on Wednesday.

The team will take a break from competition over the next two weeks due to midterms. The Wolverines have one more duals meet on Jan. 31 at Bishop Amat before league finals begin on Feb. 4.

Once the team reaches the post season, the team will shift its focus from team-oriented meets to more individual-oriented meets. While the team as a whole is relatively inexperienced, Head Coach Gary Bairos said that a couple of the more experienced wrestlers such as displayed great individual performances this week against Alemany and Chaminade and should qualify for CIF playoffs. Bairos was particularly impressed by the job of his co-captain Brandon Chen ’12, who wrestles in the 147-pound weight class and is considered the best on the team by Bairos.

“I think that Brandon Chen is our leader, he’s really been coming on strong,” Bairos said. “We have a lot of high hopes for him.”
