Jazz groups perform last big band style show

The Jazz Band, Studio Jazz Band, and Jazz Ensemble groups performed May 4 in “An Evening of Jazz” in Rugby Auditorium. Ensembles performed in big band style for the last time this year, also featuring soloists.

The Jazz Band opened the performance with “Old Devil Moon” by Burton Lane and Herbie Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage,” which was arranged by jazz instructor Shawn Costantino’s friend John Yao.

The Studio Jazz Band performed notable pieces including “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers (Todd ’95, Kori ’97) and “Higher Ground” by Stevie Wonder.

“As a group, we’ve been able to master pieces a lot quicker,” Studio Jazz Band pianist Vincent Huang ’14 said. “It really speaks volumes to how much we’ve improved over the course of the year. We have achieved such a high level of jazz performance, and I’m really looking forward to this concert.”

The Jazz Ensemble closed the concert with pieces such as John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” and “Little Secrets” by Michael Angelakos, which was also arranged by Yao.

The groups are all excellent and have shown marked growth since the beginning of the year,” Costantino said.
