The boys basketball team decisively defeated Agoura High School in their season debut Thursday. The team showed exceptional cohesiveness and spirit on the court, taking a commanding 10 point lead by the end of the first quarter, which they extended throughout the rest of the game, soaring to a 69-41 victory. Streamed live on HWTV, the match garnered a total of 823 views.

Sophomore Jacob Huggins ’23 said he felt that the team’s energy was at an all-time high before the game.

“After waiting for over a year, everyone was excited to play,” Huggins said. “It was definitely a really fun moment for the whole team.”

Huggins said that despite the mistakes the team made, the players were able to pull it together for some good runs.

“At one point in the game we got a few steals and dunks which gave us a lot of momentum and ultimately propelled us to the win,” Huggins said. “But hopefully, the mishaps we had during the game will be corrected by the time we play again, and we can end up with another win.”

Point guard Cubin Molzen ’22 shared Huggins’s sentiments regarding both the start of the season and the outcome of the game.

“We’ve been practicing really hard for the past few months under Covid safety protocols, and it feels good to see our work come to fruition,” Molzen said. “It feels great to start our season with a win and that feeling is definitely improved by the fact that we won after a year of not being able to compete and do what we love.”

Going into their next game against Village Christian School on March 27,  Molzen said the team will be focusing on the defensive end of the floor, as well as having a greater attention to detail.
