Girls’ volleyball narrowly falls in season opener

After defeating Thousands Oaks in the finals of the So Cal Summer challenge, the varsity volleyball squad began their Mission League season with a 1-3 loss to Santa Barbara Sept. 3 in Taper gymnasium.

Through the first two sets the Wolverines were able to secure a comfortable seven-point lead on the Dons, but strong hitting from the Dons allowed them to make a comeback and win both sets by scores of 21-25 and 23-25.

After two down-to-the-wire sets, the squad was able to defeat the Dons 21-25 in the third set due to a serving frenzy from setter Nicole Elattrache ’14 and some smashes from front row hitter Josephine Kremer ’14. The team was able to close out the set strong, and defensive plays from Mila Barzdukas ’15 helped keep the ball in play after smashes by the Dons’ front row. The Wolverines eventually lost the third set to Santa Barbara, ending the match with a result of 1-3.
