Boys’ basketball rallies back to top Palisades in season opener

A double-digit fourth quarter comeback and a last-second layup from Derick Newton ’14 to force overtime kicked off the varsity boys’ basketball season in thrilling fashion, as the Wolverines defeated Palisades 70-66 in overtime Tuesday at the Santa Monica tournament.

Newton, who missed 17 games last year due to injury, led the team with 37 points. The Wolverines found themselves down by twelve in the fourth quarter, but would surge back and score 16 unanswered points. The team’s run was topped off by Newton’s miraculous layup to beat the buzzer, which came off a full court pass from Bryan Polan ’14 . The Wolverines held Palisades to 17 points from the start of their run to the end of the game, clinching the victory in the extra period.

The basketball team now opens the 2013-2014 campaign at 1-0, and will face host Santa Monica in the tournament tomorrow.
