After losing 3-1 to Marymount High School Oct. 9, the girls’ volleyball team’s league record is 0-3.

In every game, the team’s motto of “All In” means that the girls fight until the end and put all of their effort in to winning every point.

“I think since school started, the team has definitely reached its goal of becoming close with everyone on the team,” opposite Alex Florent ’15 said. “Because of that, we’ve really been able to play like a family.”

In many of its games, the team jumps ahead with an early lead, only to lose that lead in the final few points. In one set against Notre Dame High School, the team reached 24 points, but the Knights took the set 26-24.

“If volleyball games were played to 23 or 24 points, we would win every game,” said team captain and libero Mila Barzdukas ’15.

Middle Natalie Wiegand ’16 has consistently been one of the team’s leading scorers.Her hard-hitting spikes and effective blocks have been able to singlehandedly stop multiple streaks every game. However, her power in addition to setter Kaira-Muraoka Robertson’s ’16 consistent sets and point-saving dives were not enough to defeat the hard-hitting Oaks Christian Lions in the Wolverines’ non-league homecoming match Sept. 27.

This season, in accordance with its “All In” motto, although it consistently has had a one or two game deficit, the team has continued to fight and play hard in every point.

“We’ve been playing with every ounce of fight that we have in our games, and it’s definitely noticeable,” Florent said.

Although the team has an overall record of 6-10, its first league matchup wasn’t until halfway through the season against arch-rival Notre Dame High School Oct. 1.

“The first month of school can be challenging to adjust to, especially with a heavy volleyball schedule,” outside hitter Josie Treadwell ’16 said. “To prepare for our upcoming league games, the team has been focusing on refining skills and replicating game-like scenarios in practice.”

The Wolverines lost 3-1 in their matchup against Notre Dame, although both teams were tough to the end of all four games.

Following the characteristic of the season, the Wolverines reached 22 points in the first set, 24 points in the second set and 17 points in the fourth set, only taking the third set 26-24.

“We are still getting in the groove of things,” outside hitter Rachel Savage ’15 said. “We are getting close to figuring out how to balance disciple and energy effectively.”

The Wolverines lost 3-2 to Marlborough School Oct. 7 in their second league match, although they reached set point multiple times in the three sets that the Mustangs won.

“In practice, we’ve been focusing on releasing, regrouping, and refocusing after each play so that we can put our best effort into every play,” Florent said.

In their third league matchup, which was against the Marymount Sailors Oct. 9, the Wolverines lost 3-1, taking the third set 25-19.

Florent, who is six feet, was sidelined with a hurt knee, which meant that the Wolverines had a lack of height in the front row. However, outside hitter Truth Cole ’16, who is five feet six inches, was very effective as an opposite and blocked multiple Sailor hits.

The Wolverines’ next league match is against Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy.
