The varsity baseball team played with two Los Angeles Little League teams at Robinson Park on March 1. Following the loss of their home field in the Eaton Fire, Central Altadena Little League was invited by the West Pasadena Little League team to a day of baseball to foster a sense of community following the Los Angeles fires, accompanied by the school’s varsity players.
Nathaniel Blum ’27 said he enjoyed being able to connect with his peers and the children through a common interest..
“My favorite part of the event was watching the kids come together with the Harvard-Westlake baseball team coaching,” Blum said. “We had a great time coming together through baseball after a tragedy.”
Head Coach Jared Halpert said this was the team’s way of helping the members of their community following the fires.
“Tragedy strikes and everyone does what they can,” Halpert said. “This is our way of giving back.”
Asher Bunnin ’27 said he found the day spent with the youth players to be rewarding.
“It was fun helping the kids and seeing them smile,” Bunnin said.
Miguel Villeges ’25 said the team collected equipment as a way to help build unity among the community.
“We gathered baseball equipment to give to the people who need it and who unfortunately lost their homes,” Villeges said. “That’s what sports does, it brings everyone together. No matter where you’re from, what your background is or where you live baseball is a great thing to bring people together.”
