Kutler to offer ‘pseudo-MOOC’ in linguistics

Middle school Latin teacher Moss Pike will teach a Kutler Center Directed Study in linguistics next year.

The first semester will cover introductory linguistics, while the second semester will require students to undertake project-based work, Pike said.

Since Pike is a middle school teacher, he will run the course mainly online, he said.

“I’ll make the occasional commute [to the Upper School], but we’ll run the course like a pseudo-MOOC, with online sessions and flipped content too,” Pike said, referring to massive open online courses that many universities have recently begun offering.

Pike is also considering incorporating Google-plus into the course to enable open content and “hangout sessions” for the class, he said.
