Geological survey begins on land for garage

Geotechnical engineers began conducting new borings on Harvard-Westlake’s property on the west side of Coldwater Canyon Monday.

The school has been working to complete its environmental review to build a parking garage and playing field on the western property.

Vice President John Amato told the school’s neighbors in a letter sent Friday that Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Krekorian has requested that “Harvard-Westlake submit a new geotechnical and soils report, including new geologic cross sections and borings” to the city as part of the review.

“Councilmember Krekorian’s request is appropriate as we all want to ensure that this project is safe, reliable, and can meet the highest standards of review,” Amato said in the letter.

The tests are anticipated to last several days. Amato warned in the letter that “drills and other equipment might be audible to some of our neighbors at different times during the day.”

The work is expected to begin at 8 a.m. and end by 5 p.m.

“We sincerely hope that this activity will not be disruptive but want everyone to be aware of the activity and why it is occurring,” Amato said in the letter.

With the construction of the parking garage and playing field, Amato said traffic flow will be improved on Coldwater Canyon and the school will no longer use the community streets for parking.
