Water filters, quarters for clean clothes highlight Wednesday assembly

The student founder of Clean Water Ambassadors Foundation, Cole Kawana ’16, encouraged students and faculty to help provide water filters to communities worldwide that lack clean water sources at the 1st and 3rd Wednesday Assembly Feb. 4.

Kawana went on the school’s Digital Story-Telling trip to Rwanda last year, an experience that he said sparked his interest in community service.

“After my life changing trip to Rwanda, I figured out what an impact one person can have,” Kawana said. Kawana distributed water filters in Rwanda. “Each of my filters can give 100 people clean water for five years,” Kawana said. “After I came back from Rwanda, I realized that five years isn’t forever, which is why I started my non-profit, the Clean Water Ambassadors Foundation.”

Community and Character Committee members Allison Gorokhovsky ’17 and Carmen Levine ’17 promoted Quarters for a Cause, a company that assists people who can’t afford clean clothing. The committee will be holding a competition between dean groups to raise the most money over the next two weeks, with the winning group receiving a free meal from Joe’s Pizza Truck on Feb. 20. All students will be able to purchase from the truck.

Head Prefects Albert Choi ’15 and Sara Winshell ’15 announced Dora Palmer ’15 as the first place winner of the Mission Statement Contest. The second place award went to Timothy Song ’16, and Jack Stovitz ’16 came in third place. Visual Arts Department Head Cheri Gaulke’s first period video art class received a first place group award.

Security guard Mark Geiger played the sounds of both the fire alarm and lockdown alarm to make students more aware of the difference between the two. The Student Athlete Advisory Committee named basketball player Alex Copeland ’15 and Sophia Gonzales ’15 athlete of the month awards.
