Former student to stay at GOP despite controversy

The Broward County GOP Secretary and former student who attacked a classmate after school 10 years ago will keep his post with the Florida Republican Party with one year of probation, the LA Times reported.

After uncovering Rupert Tarsey’s violent past, party members called on him to resign, and Broward County GOP Chairman Bob Sutton tried to suspend him.

Florida Republican Party Chairman Blaise Ingoglia said that while he thinks Tarsey should have resigned, the decision ultimately laid with the local party who voted not to remove him, the LA Times reported.

Tarsey, formerly known as Rupert Ditsworth, attacked Lizzie Barcay ’07 40 times with a claw hammer in his car during his senior year after expressing suicidal thoughts.

He pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor and eventually moved to Florida, where he changed his name.
