Out of 34 schools that participated in the Mathcounts competition on Feb. 24 at Northrup Grumman in Redondo Beach, the Harvard-Westlake A team was one of the groups to qualify for the California State Finals. The team is unique: it is made up of all seventh graders. Although Mathcounts is open to all seventh and eighth graders, this year, the team with mixed grades followed behind the all seventh grade team. The competition was separated in three rounds: the Spirit Round, Target Round and Team Round.
âIt was a really great accomplishment making it to the state competition,â said Sajji Sri-Kumar â12, a contestant on the A team. âEveryone on the team should get credit for it.â
The team was chosen based on club involvement and performance on math contests held at school and other Mathcounts school competitions.
âThe kids tried hard, showed courage and had fun,â math teacher and math club adviser Darin Beigie said.
