Wrestling team gets first in league

After winning the Mission League title on Feb. 2, the wrestling team will begin CIF playoffs this Friday at Brea Linda High School.

The team had its best season in years despite injuries that sidelined key wrestlers Daniel Meer ’08, Evan Ryan ’09 and Hank Murr ’09 for parts of the season.

“Our coach says this is the best team he’s taken to CIF,” Gavin Ross ’09 said. “If four guys win their weight class we have a legitimate shot to win CIF, which is ridiculous because we haven’t even had a full team this year.”

Ross, along with Ben Kogan ’11, Spencer Friedman ’09, Meer, and Richard Leuchter ’08, won first place in his weight class in the Mission League tournament.

Murr won second place and Tarek Tohme ’08 won third place in their respective weight classes. Nearly every wrestler qualified for CIF playoffs, which the team sees as a strong sign of their overall quality and depth.

The team first saw that quality when it won the Estancia Tournament early in the season, Ross said.

“We will continue to show our quality in the CIF playoffs,” Matt Felker ’09 said.

This year’s league championship also ended the four-year title run of archrival Crespi.
