The boysâ varsity basketball teamsâ dreams of a State Title were ended Saturday at Pauley Pavilion by Ocean View High School, who defeated the Wolverines 79-63. Ocean View opened the game by hitting a barrage of three pointers including one at the first quarter buzzer to give them a 28-17 lead.
The Wolverines were able to cut the deficit to six points near the end of the second quarter, but Ocean View closed the half on a five point run to restore its lead back to 11 by halftime. Ocean View then started out the second half by scoring six unanswered points, giving them a 17 point lead which never got smaller than 12.
The Seahawks were able to use their speed advantage to easily dismantle the Wolverine press, a press the Wolverines were forced to stick to throughout the game because of their large deficit.
âWe were just trying to create turnovers to hope to pull out a miracle,â guard Chris Barnum â10.
Ocean View guards were able to easily get to the basket early on, forcing the Wolverines to double down low leaving the perimeter open for Ocean View sharpshooter Mason Jones who had 22 points while shooting 4-7 from behind the three point arc. As a team, Ocean View shot 56% from behind the three point line.
Despite the loss, the Wolverines remained positive and happy about their season.
âWe had a great run,â said guard Austin Kelly â10 who led the Wolverines with 16 points. âWe have no reason to hang our heads, we ran into a team that shot the lights out. Losing doesnât take anything away from our season, from our CIF Championship.â
