Girls’ Softball begins year with better record

    By Cary Volpert

After a losing season last year, the softball squad looks to redeem itself as it has come running out of the gates with a 5-3 overall record, including a 2-1 start in last weekend’s Lancaster High Desert Tournament.

The team will look for guidance from captain Emma Katz ’09 who is returning to the team after missing last year due to a semester abroad program. Katz said there are a lot of new players on the team this year so the team has been currently focusing on softball’s basics.

“This year we have a lot of new faces (four freshman and two juniors) so we’re breaking it down and working on the fundamentals to understand the game,” Katz said. “Since we have a lot of new people I’m hoping we get to know each other a lot better so that we can work effectively as a team and put in collaborative team effort.”

Besides Katz, the softball crew will look to Coach Joe Aranda for leadership. Chelsea McMahon ’10 credits Aranda with much of the team’s improvement.

“He’s a fantastic person and coach,” McMahon said. “The best thing about him is his intensity; whether we’re winning or losing, he always has something to say to make us better.”
