Varsity football is defeated by Cathedral

By Austin Block

A 32-16 loss to the undefeated Cathedral Phantoms last night at Cathedral has left the fate of the varsity football team’s season resting on a single game. The team, 6-3 overall and 1-2 in league, must defeat Bishop St. Montgomery in its last league game on Friday to make the playoffs. Had the team beat Cathedral, it would have been assured a playoff berth, and a win against Bishop St. Montgomery and a Serra loss to Cathedral would have left it in a three way tie for first place in the Del Rey League. Now the team’s playoff fate lies in its hands, and its Friday game could be its last.

“We came out so flat and it was 16-0 at halftime just like that,” slot receiver Greg Comanor ’10, who scored a touchdown during the fourth quarter, said.

Cathedral scored on the first drive of the game, and JJ Jones ’10 fumbled the ensuing kick return.

The team also gave up a safety later in the game after a Charlie Porter ’12 interception on the one yard line.
