Volleyball remains #1 in the country despite loss to Marymount

By Charlton Azuoma

After winning the Durango Fall Classic Tournament in Las Vegas, the girls’ volleyball team suffered its first defeat of the season Friday at the hands of the Marymount Sailors, ranked third in the nation by MaxPreps.com.

Despite the loss, the Wolverines remain atop the MaxPreps national rankings.

The Durango Fall Classic featured the top volleyball teams in the nation, including Assumption High School in Kentucky and Redlands East Valley in California. The Wolverines were not the favorites entering the tournament, but began to prove themselves worthy of hoisting the championship when they defeated Assumption and Long Beach Poly.

Danielle Salka ’11 and Christina Higgins ’11 carried the offense with six and 11 kills respectively as the team defeated La Costa Canyon in straight sets (2-0) to win the championship.

After their championship run at Durango, the Wolverines went back to work in preparation for a highly anticipated away game against Marymount. The game count was tied 1-1 after two sets, with both teams edging out narrow wins. However, Marymount proceeded to win the next two sets by scores of 25-14 and 25-21.
