Boys’ soccer season update

By David Gobel

Due to injuries and experienced seniors leaving for Academy club teams, the boys’ soccer team has had an inconsistent season so far. Currently, the team has a 7-9-4 overall record and a 2-3-4 record in league play.

“Some injuries to key players have slowed down our progress, but we are definitely playing better soccer,” said varsity coach Freddy Arroyo. “All games will be tough, but I believe our boys will continue to improve and get results.”

Although the team began the season with a win at Bell Gardens, they struggled in the preseason Aliso Cup tournament, where they lost four straight games and did not score a goal in that entire span. However the team rebounded with a strong performance at the High School Showcase in Santa Barbara, winning two games and losing one. The team played one more tournament, the Valley Kickoff Classic in Calabasas, where they won two games and lose only one.

League play began after the Valley Kickoff Tournament, and the Wolverines played their first league match against St. Francis, losing 1-3. The following game at Notre Dame was the Wolverines first league victory, with forward Alex Hong ’11 getting a hat trick.

Following the win at Notre Dame, the Wolverines tied against Crespi and lost a tough match 0-2 against Cathedral. However, the Wolverines’ fortunes changed when they tied rival Loyola 1-1, who are ranked 4th in Division I of CIF.

On Wednesday, the Wolverines played Notre Dame again at home. Though Notre Dame got off to a quick 2-0 lead, the Wolverines managed to get back into the game, and eventually even the score in the last minute due to a Charlie Porter ’12 header.

The team’s next game will be at Chaminade on Wednesday.
