Boys’ soccer clinches playoff berth with close win

    By Micah Sperling

Boys’ soccer defeated Simi Valley 3-2 in two overtimes in the wild-card round of the CIF Playoffs on Feb. 16, with Alex Goodwin ’12 scoring the game-winning goal. They move on to face Edison High School in the first round of CIF on Friday, Feb. 18.

The Wolverines took a 2-1 lead earlier in the game on a goal by Charlie Porter ’12, but allowed Simi Valley to come back and tie, forcing the two overtimes. Will Oliver ’11 scored the team’s first goal with a long range shot in the first half. The team qualified for the playoffs with a 3-5-4 record in league and an 8-11-5 record overall.

Although the team struggled to score in the first half of its league finale last Wednesday against Alemany, an  Oliver penalty kick late in the second half was enough to clinch a spot in CIF playoffs.

“We knew we needed to score and to win if we wanted to make it to the playoffs, so we kept it simple and tried to get off to a strong start,” Head Coach Freddy Arroyo said. “I know we could have scored more and earlier, but it didn’t matter as long as we got the win.”
