Charlie Benell ’12 Commits to Texas A&M

By Michael Aronson

After finishing his third straight season on boys’ varsity golf, Charlie Benell ’12 has verbally committed to Texas A&M which as of April 27 stands as the sixth best Division I school for golf in the nation.

Benell’s recent seventh and 14th place tournament finish at events in Texas have propelled him to 229 in the nation for high school golfers, according to the American Junior Golf Association Polo Rankings, a 478-place improvement.

Since he was a freshman, Benell has finished in the top 10 individually in the Mission League to qualify for individual CIF competition. His notable finishes this year with the team include a 3 under par 34 at Harding golf course and a 12th place finish out of 227 players at the Champions Invitational in Palm Springs this past April, shooting a 3 under 69 the first day of competition.

“I’m really excited because Texas A&M is a favorite to win every year,” Benell said. “It is a great school with unbelievable coaches and after making many visits to different schools, this seemed like a perfect fit for me.”

Benell is set to sign with the school in November on college golf’s national signing day.
