Boys’ basketball advanced to CIF quarterfinals with 4 point win

Forward Derick Newton ’14 scored 20 points and center Zena Edosomwan ’12 added 17 en route to a 53-49 win over JSerra tonight in the second round of Division 4AA CIF playoffs.
The teams were engaged in a close affair in the first half, with the Wolverines holding a narrow lead throughout. Harvard-Westlake led 14-11 at the end of the opening period and entered halftime with a 28-23 lead.
The Wolverines pulled away in the third quarter, holding their opponents to just seven points. The team headed into the final period with a 16-point lead, but the Lions crawled their way back into the game in the fourth, outscoring the Wolverines 19-7.
The victory comes on the heels of a 74-40 rout of Whitney in Wednesday’s first round matchup.
Next up for the Wolverines comes Serra of Gardena Tuesday at home.
