Golfer Benell drops in CIF Individuals

By Robbie Loeb

After falling in a sudden death playoff at CIF Individuals Monday, golfer Charlie Benell’s ’12 postseason ended two rounds shy of State Finals.

Benell shot a 75 for the round at Victoria Country Club, one stroke behind the cutoff for the next round. Twenty-seven golfers shot 74 or under and 28 advance to State Qualifiers and the 11 golfers who shot 75 entered a sudden death playoff to vie for the final spot in the next round. In the playoff, the low score on each hole advances to the next hole. Five golfers, including Benell, advanced past the first playoff hole after shooting par, but on hole two, Benell’s par was bested by a playoff-winning birdie and he was eliminated from CIF.

Benell got off to a terrible start, he said, after bogeying four of the first five holes. He picked himself up and shot 1-under for the remainder of the round to stay alive.

Benell’s first time playing this course was in a practice round on Sunday.

“I’m a little disappointed,” he said. “I should’ve made it farther, but I’m proud of the way I played this year.”
