    Fried debuts in minor leagues

    By Robbie Loeb

Max Fried ’12 is on the books.

The seventh overall pick in the 2012 MLB First Year Player Draft earned his first start as a pro today with the Arizona League Padres, the rookie-level team for the San Diego Padres.

Fried threw just one inning in his minor league debut and faced six batters, striking out one and walking two while allowing one hit and no runs. He managed to get out of the inning without allowing a run with the bases loaded and one out.

The Padres prospect matched up against the AZL Athletics pitcher Tyler Vail, the fifth round pick in the 2010 draft.

The 6-foot-4 southpaw has not started a game since he pitched a complete game shutout in the first round of CIF playoffs on May 17.

The 18-year-old joined the team in Peoria, Ariz. on June 22, and is not expected to pitch much this summer while he recovers from the high school season.

In his senior season with the Wolverines, Fried went 8-2 with a 2.2 ERA and 105 strikeouts, giving up 43 hits and 29 walks in 66 innings.
