Symphony orchestra, concert strings and wind ensemble combined to play in the Winter Instrumental Chamber Music Concert at 5 p.m. at Santa Monica 1st Presbyterian Church Sunday Feb. 23. Rather than multiple, large group pieces, performing arts teacher Mark Hilt divided the students into several chamber ensembles, the sizes of which range from duos to septets. None of the groups had a conductor.
“Part of the learning process is a collaboration between all the members of the group, to try and achieve a performance that matches what the composer asks for and what the group wants,” Hilt said. “The end result is the students’ own process, revealed in each performance.”
