For the first time ever, the varsity football team has a winning record in the Mission League. The Wolverines took a 7-0 lead after their first drive against the St. Paul Swordsmen and led the rest of the game, ultimately winning 44-11.

“The coaches did a great job game planning and the kids responded to the challenge,” Head Coach Scot Ruggles said. “We really came together as a team.”

Offensively, quarterback Chad Kanoff ’13 led the Wolverines with six touchdowns.

Defensively, the Wolverines surrendered one touchdowns to St. Paul’s running back Kurt Scoby, who transferred to St. Paul at the beginning of this school year. Scoby averaged over 8 yards a carry with Charter Oaks last season and has a scholarship offer from the University of Miami (Fla.).

“Our main focus was stopping the run,” defensive lineman Henry Schlossberg ’13 said. “We knew they were going to run the ball forty to fifty times. We had been breaking down film on them for two weeks, we had just had our bye week before it, so we knew everything they were going to do the second they came out.”

Overall, the Wolverines stand at 5-1 after the win and 1-0 in league. They host league opponent St. Francis on Friday, Oct. 12.

If the Wolverines can keep winning in league, they will make the playoffs for the first time since joining the six-team Mission League in 2010. The top three teams in league play advance to playoffs. Non-league performance plays no factor in determining seeding.

The Wolverines did not qualify in 2010 after going 0-5 then missed playoffs last year with a league record of 1-4.
