Patrick Halkett ’14 and Jake Bracken ’14 earned the right to call themselves the “best in league” after winning the Mission League wrestling championships Saturday. The two seniors’ first place finishes capped off the League Finals tournament, in which ten total Wolverines qualified for the CIF Championships tournament Feb. 21-22.
Four total seniors, one junior, two sophomores and three freshmen placed in Saturday’s tournament at Alemany in order to represent the Wolverines at CIF. Halkett and Bracken out-dueled all Mission League wrestlers in the 113-pound and 132-pound weight classes respectively to clinch their spots at the top, while Alex Lange ’14 and Connor Kalantari ’14 finished third at 145 pounds and 195 pounds respectively.
“It’s pretty sweet starting a sport not knowing anything, then becoming a much more advanced wrestler and just a more developed person – both physically and mentally – from my sport,” Halkett, who began wrestling in seventh grade, said. “CIF is the important one, but it feels great nonetheless to have my hard work finally pay off.”
Malcolm Neill ’15 also took home third in the 170-pound category, with Ryan Ruiz ’16 capturing second at 120 pounds and Dietrich Tribull ’16 claiming third at 160 pounds. Jake Adler ’17 finished second in the 126-pound weight class, Josh Musicant ’17 went for third in the 138-pound group, and Russell Davis ’17 placed third at 106 pounds.
