The Harvard-Westlake Parents Association (HWPA) held an event for the fifth Senior Appreciation Day of the school year during lunch Feb. 9. Parents volunteers distributed Valentine’s Day-themed candy to seniors on the Quad.
Senior Appreciation Day is held roughly once a month to celebrate current seniors by offering free food and gifts.
HWPA member Debbie Kramar (Zoe ’24, Hailey ’27), who helped organize the event with fellow member Shana Glassman (Jessa ’20, Gabriel ’22, Sammy ’24), said she wanted the event to make seniors feel happy.
“We really just try to find ways to make the seniors smile and enjoy a little bit of extra happiness in their day,” Kramar said. “So today, we did something for Valentine’s Day, and we’re just trying to brighten everyone’s day during this time.”
Glassman said she and Kramar selected this Senior Appreciation Day’s theme and organized the parent volunteers.
“Every month, there are two moms that [determine] what the event is going to be for the month,” Glassman said. “We get everyone [from the HWPAA] to sign up to come and show up, and to give the seniors something special to look forward to.”
Spencer Casamassima ’24 said he enjoyed the theme of this month’s Senior Appreciation Day event.
“I thought it was sweet, and the candy was really good,” Casamassima said. “I got jelly beans, [Hershey’s] Kisses, [candy belts] and Laffy Taffy. I thought it’s nice they were doing that for the seniors.”
