The girls’ basketball team won the Desert Heat Tournament after a 39-33 victory over Chaminade July 18.

Chaminade, which is ranked second nationally for girls basketball according to MaxPreps, previously defeated the Wolverines in the championship game of the Saugus Tournament July 1.

“The girls have played an enormous amount of basketball this summer with our team and their club teams,” Girls’ Basketball Program Head Melissa Hearlihy said. “Jordan Brown ’16 and Lindsey Tse ’16 really provided great senior leadership to propel this team to championship status.”

During the three-day tournament, the squad also defeated Oaks Christian 39-29. The team had lost to the Lions in the semifinals of CIF State Playoffs last season.

“It felt great, especially since going into it I do not think a lot of people expected us to win that game,” Lauren Lapesarde ’17 said. “We got out to a great start and kept it up throughout the game.”

In earlier rounds of the tournament, the squad beat Redondo Union High School and West High School. Both schools’ girls’ basketball programs are ranked higher in the state than Harvard-Westlake’s according to MaxPreps.

“This team is strong from top to bottom,” Hearlihy said. “The eleven girls on this team all have something special to offer. This will make our practices stronger and give us the ability to play at a much faster pace.”
