The Lincoln-Douglas (LD) debate team competed at the Damus Hollywood Invitational held from Nov. 9-11. Participants in Novice LD were at the Upper School over the weekend, while Varsity LD debaters were only on campus for two days, as their Monday elimination rounds were held at Notre Dame High School. All other events were at Notre Dame, with the exception of World Schools Debate, which was held online.
In Varsity LD, Kaison Maruyama ’27 made it to semifinals, earning his third bid to the JW Patterson Tournament of Champions happening April 26-28 next year. Luke Rascoff ’27 went to quarterfinals as well. Asher Meron ’25 and Lilly Stobo ’26 made it to the octofinal round, while Daniel Baek ’26, Esther Goldman ’26 and August Sone ’27 debated until doubles. In Novice LD, Owen Fua ’28 and Ellie Oh ’29 made it to semifinals.
Goldman said she was grateful for this opportunity to compete in a tournament hosted by the school, considering that the team had done much preparation for the tournament.
“I am grateful to the school for facilitating this tournament and allowing me to compete,” Goldman said. “While I wish I could have gone farther, I am very proud of myself and my teammates for how well we all did. All of the team worked super hard to prepare for the tournament and I am so glad it paid off. I think our ability to work together as a team and help each other is amazing and benefits all of us.”
