The school canceled all in-person classes on both campuses following wildfires in affected areas of Los Angeles, the administration said in an email Tuesday evening. Whether or not in-person classes will be held Thursday will be decided tomorrow afternoon based on the conditions of the fires. There will be no online classes.
“Out of concern for the safety of our school community and especially for those who we know have been affected by the ongoing wildfires, Harvard-Westlake will not hold classes tomorrow,” Commons said. “A decision will be made and communicated tomorrow morning about the status of after-school athletics, performing arts, and other extracurricular activities. It is our hope to hold classes on Thursday and a decision about that will be made late tomorrow based upon prevailing conditions.”
Following heavy winds coming from the northeast on the morning of Jan. 7, which ranged from speeds of 35 up to 100 mph, wildfires began to spread throughout the Pacific Palisades area, starting at 11:04 a.m. The cause of the fires is still currently unknown. The last cancellation of in-person classes due to wildfires and air quality was in November 2019.
