Wednesday’s Upper School assembly highlighted new opportunities for students, including an upcoming internship workshop, a sports analytics conference in Boston and a spring break trip to Cuba.
HW Works Administrator Zakkaria Daniels ’10 informed students of a summer internship workshop Jan. 15 in the Kutler Center. Led by Daniels and Director of Student Affairs Jordan Church, the workshop will detail summer opportunities for students in varying fields of study. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is offering a sports analytics conference March 10 -15. Math teacher Bill Thill encouraged students to register for the trip before next week’s deadline.
“We learned how to make smart decisions in sports and sports medicine from people like Michael Lewis, the author of ‘Moneyball;’ Andrea Kremer from ESPN; NBA player Shane Battier; Nate Silver, the creator of fivethirtyeight.com; and Adam Silver, the commissioner of the NBA,” Thill said of last year’s conference.
In addition to attending the daily workshops, students will sight-see in Boston and watch a Celtics basketball game.
Urging students to participate in the upcoming Digital Storytelling trip to Cuba, Lauren Kim ’17 and Quinton Simmonds ’17 spoke about their experience on last year’s trip.
“Travelling exposes us to difference places, different experiences, and different people that we normally don’t really have a chance to interact with. It helps us learn more about ourselves and the world,” Kim said.
Middle school history teacher Lauren Nichols ’03 and upper school English teacher Adam Levine will lead the eight-day trip. The all-inclusive cost is $5,395, and the application is due Jan. 15.
Student Athletic Advisory Council members Andres Walker ’18 and Ethan Blazer ’17 announced girls basketball forward Jayla Rufus-Milner ’18 and wrestler Ryan Ruiz ’16 as the student athletes of the month for their dedication and contribution on their varsity teams.
Performing arts teacher Ted Walch is hosting ‘Cinema Sundays’ on Jan. 10 in Ahmanson Theatre. After the screening of the French movie “The 400 Blows,” Walch will lead a discussion with the other attendees.
Submission deadline for Westflix, the Harvard-Westlake Film festival, is Saturday.
