English teacher Caroline Miller will leave at the end of the school year. She will move to Edgeworth, Pa. to teach at Sewickley Academy.
During her four years at Harvard-Westlake, Miller taught the sophomore English course, English II, as well as AP Language and Composition. She also led the team of sophomore teachers this year, and worked with middle school faculty on easing the transition between ninth and tenth grade.
This year, she created the AP Language elective, “Imagined Societies: Utopia and Dystopia,” with English teacher Jeffrey Kwitny.
“[Caroline Miller] genuinely cared about teaching us material that we would enjoy learning about,” Lauren Jones ’16 said. “She cares about each and every student and their endeavors inside and outside the classroom.”
She mentored “My Word,” the school’s spoken word club, and worked with the team on writing, performing and participating in slam poetry competitions.
“I had never done spoken word before, and she kind of showed us the ropes, and showed us how everything worked,” My Word teammate Matteo Lauto ’18 said. “She taught us how to write slam poetry, and she was really the core of it. I don’t know what we’re going to do next year without her.”
Having grown up in Ohio, Miller said she is looking forward to spending more time with her brothers and sister, who live in the Midwest. However, she is going to miss the time she spent here, she said.
“My experience at Harvard-Westlake has been so incredible that its impact is difficult to sum up,” Miller said. “I’ve learned an extraordinary amount from my brilliant colleagues and dedicated students. This school is a very difficult place to leave, and I will certainly miss it a lot.”
