A Digital Storytelling Adventure to Cambodia, a Beat the Bot Challenge and the Advanced Dance II teaser for their upcoming show highlighted Wednesday’s assembly.
Sarah McAllister ’15 announced that Head of Visual Arts Department Cheri Gaulke, cinematographer Jeff MacIntyre and the director of Friendship Tours World Travel Alethea Tyner Paradis will lead a trip to Cambodia July 17 – 28.
Following the Digital Storytelling Adventure trip to Cuba, led by the same chaperones, school policies were changed so that students from other schools can no longer participate in Harvard-Westlake trips during the school year, and outside vendors cannot serve as chaperones and two Harvard-Westlake teachers must be on all trips.
Another chaperone has not been announced.
Registration is open on the Friendship Tours World Travel website, but not on the Harvard-Westlake website student portal.
Jim Patterson, director of Kutler Center and Summer Programs, said the trip had not officially been approved by the school but would be approved “probably within a week.”
“It’s sort of in a conditional stage right now,” Patterson said. “There are a couple of things we have to work out logistically, and then the trip will be approved.”
The Studies in Sports Research class announced the Beat the Bot NCAA bracketology challenge where students will make their March Madness Tournament predictions, competing for gift cards. On March 10 there will be a meeting to learn about tools for prediction and March 16 students will make their picks. Prefect Council will live stream games in Rugby Theater.
On March 19-20 there will be Pop-a-Shot, an arcade style basketball game, on the quad, and pizza will be available on March 19. On March 20 the molecular gastronomy class will sell food that they have made.
Dancers from Advanced Dance II and guest dancers from Advance Dance I as well as six male dancers, performed a teaser to promote their Cinderella-themed show. The showcase will take place March 6, 7 and 8 in the Rugby Theater.
Film Festival student directors Marianne Verrone ’15, Danielle Stolz ’15 and Max Cho ’15 announced that the 12th Annual Harvard-Westlake Film Festival will be March 20 at the Arclight Cinema at 7 p.m. The director of “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” Edgar Wright will speak at the festival.
“He’s British and funny so obviously come,” Verrone said.
Cole Kawana ’16 announced that the annual Community Service Fair will be March 16-20 and will include guest speakers and community service clubs on the quad during activities period. He also said that starting March 10 he will be selling plastic water bottles from his organization, the Clean Water Ambassadors Foundation, at the cafeteria. For every bottle sold, one person will be given five years of clean water, Kawana said.
Adam Hirschhorn ’16 urged students to donate books to the upcoming Book Truck drive to help underprivileged children have more access to books. New or almost new books and cash are accepted.
“If everyone brings just one book we will meet and surpass our goal – we’ll almost double it,” Hirschhorn said. “The only exception is books like ’50 Shades of Grey.’”

Soccer players Cole Fletcher ’15 and Courtney Gazmarian ’15 were announced as the Athletes of the Month.
