A 3-2 Wolverine boysâ volleyball victory ended the Loyola Cubsâ 99 league match win streak yesterday at Loyola and earned the Wolverines sole possession of first place in the Mission League. The Cubs had topped the Mission League standings for 10 straight years.
âComing in there we knew we had nothing to lose,â captain Sean Dennis â08 said. âWe played our best and really came together as a team. It was a historic win for this program.â
The first game, a Loyola victory, was an indication of the back and forth pace that would continue through the evening. The Cubs jumped out to a quick seven point lead, but the Wolverines came back to tie the game at 24.
Loyola won that game 29-27, but the Wolverines took control of the next game and tied the score at one game. The teams then split the next two games and the match was tied at two.
The Wolverines won the fifth game 15-11 without a single unforced error. The victory left the Wolverines in first place in the Mission League with an 8-3 overall record and a 4-0 record in league.
